有关“八荣八耻”翻译的讨论和思考（节选）

    1， 以热爱祖国为荣，以危害祖国为耻

    2， 以服务人民为荣，以背离人民为耻

    3， 以崇尚科学为荣，以愚昧无知为耻

    4， 以辛勤劳动为荣，以好逸恶劳为耻

    5， 以团结互助为荣，以损人利己为耻

    6， 以诚实守信为荣，以见利忘义为耻

    7， 以遵纪守法为荣，以违法乱纪为耻

      8， 以艰苦奋斗为荣，以骄奢淫逸为耻。

    胡锦涛主席提出的社会主义荣辱观，涉及我国思想道德建设的大局，也是实现和谐社会的重大步骤。“八荣八耻”一词将会长期使用，因此应该努力找到一个比较准确、完善的英语译本，供广大传播界和翻译界参考和使用。

    “荣辱’一词虽然比较“文”，但在我国人民的日常生活中却经常使用。几千年前，孟子说过，“有仁则荣，无仁则耻”，把仁与不仁作为荣辱的标尺。现在的中年人应当记得，在五、六十年代“共产主义接班人”的歌词中，有“热爱祖国、热爱人民、热爱科学、热爱劳动”的说法,而团结互助和艰苦奋斗则是中国人民的传统美德，也是中国共产党所一贯大力提倡的革命品德。坚持诚信（见《论语》），反对见利忘义（见《孟子》）在我国的传统价值观中占有重要地位，也是近年来人们针对市场经济中出现的负面现象所经常强调的道德品德。 遵纪守法更是法治社会中所必不可少的公德。有了以上的理解，对译好“八荣八耻”会有一定的帮助。

    “八荣八耻”提出后，新华社对外部率先推出它的英译本：

    (1) Love the Motherland, do her no harm.

    (2) Serve the people, never betray them.

    (3) Follow science, discard fatuity.

    (4)Be diligent, not indolent.

    (5) Be united and help each other, make no gains at other’s expense.

    (6) Be honest and trustworthy, do not spend ethics for profits.

    (7)Be disciplined and law-abiding, not chaotic and lawless.

    (8) Live plainly and work hard, do not wallow in luxuries and pleasures.

    这一译本及时准确地传达了原文所包含的信息，因而被许多新闻和对外传播单位所采用。当然，从翻译的角度，看，仍有多处可以改进。

    美联社有自己的译法:

    (1)Love, do not harm the motherland.

    (2)Serve, don’t disserve the people.

    (3)Uphold science; don’t be ignorant and unenlightened.

    (4)Work hard; don’t be lazy and hate work.

    (5)Be united and help each other; don’t gain benefits at the expense of others.

    (6)Be honest and trustworthy, not profit-mongering at the expense of your values.

    (7)Be disciplined and law-abiding instead of chaotic and lawless.

    (8)Know plain living and hard struggle, do not wallow in luxuries and pleasures.

    这个译本与新华社对外部的译本相比，就显得粗糙些，有不少需要商榷的地方。

    外交部翻译协会组织了征集“八荣八耻”英译文活动，提出了许多有益的设想。如，他们对“荣”(virtues, honors)和“耻”（disgrace, shames）和对翻译句式（用祈使句dos and don’ts，还是用“it is a virtue to do sth, a disgrace to do sth”）的考虑 ,以及对原文中众多具有中国文化含义的成语（如见利忘义、好逸恶劳、骄奢淫逸等）如何翻译，做了极为有益的探讨。
